Before it was a world-class ski resort, Whistler was an acclaimed fishing destination and Alta Lake was the crown jewel. Almost 100 years ago, Rainbow Lodge on Alta Lake was the most popular fishing resort west of the Rockies.
Today, Backroads Whistler lets you experience the same thrills that made Alta Lake famous. With a great selection of aluminium boats and belly boats, plus pre-rigged rods, flies, lures and licenses, Backroads Whistler is the hassle-free way to enjoy a great day of fishing in Whistler. Backroads staff will also give you instructions on how to use the gear, and even point you in the direction of where the fish hang out in the lake. All fishing boats rentals come with anchors, rod holders, nets and bailers.
And if you need a guide or water instructor, Backroads Whistler will be happy to recommend a qualified local fishing guide.
Take an aluminum rowboat out for a fishing trip! There are plenty of 3-5lb trout in Alta Lake. On most summer days they're in deep water far from shore, but a rowboat can bring you right to them and our staff can help you gear up.

Alta Lake and all of Whistler’s local waterways are “catch and release” fisheries. Letting them go means you can catch them again. Backroads Whistler is a member of the Whistler Fish Stewardship Group and practices sustainable environmental stewardship.
Your fishing excursion begins at the Lakeside Park Watersports Centre on beautiful Alta Lake where, once there, you’ll be fitted with lifejackets, paddles and gear prior to your departure. Please take advantage of Backroads’ free parking.
You may want to bring a light snack, however our concession stand does have ice cream, novelties and other snacks. It’s also a good idea to bring a warm sweater or light jacket, as mountain weather changes quickly.
All fishing boat rentals include life jackets and paddles. Fishing gear is also available for hire.
