Dip your paddle in the calm waters of Alta Lake and experience Whistler’s oldest recreational sport. Long before there was a Whistler Mountain, Alta Lake was one of the most popular tourist destinations west of the Rockies. For the past 100 years, pioneers and tourists alike have paddled its waters, awed by the spectacular glacier-capped mountain views.
Backroads Whistler gives you plenty of options for your paddling adventure too, offering a first-class selection of canoes, single kayaks, double kayaks, pedal boats and row-boats. The boats are easy to master as well, making Backroads Whistler boat rentals an ideal summer activity for families and for every skill level. After you’ve explored the lake, spend the rest of the day in beautiful Lakeside Park enjoying everything from swimming and fishing to picnics and suntanning.
Canoes are the classic Canadian boat, and Backroads Whistler’s canoes are very wide and stable. The boats can hold 2-3 people plus gear, so you’ll have plenty of opportunity to practice some teamwork.
Single kayaks are great fun for all ages. They're easy to learn, agile and there's no teamwork necessary! Alta Lake is an ideal place to practice your kayaking skills.
Double kayaks are easy to figure out, so they're a great boat for first-time paddlers on Alta Lake. These boats are very versatile, allowing paddlers of different levels to explore the area together.
Pedal boats are our easiest boats to operate. They're very stable and lots of fun! Most kids can use these boats by themselves (with parental supervision, of course).
Row, row, row our boats – and have the time of your life at Lakeside Park. These easy-to-handle rowboats are ideal for family fun, a romantic paddle or just merrily, merrily, merrily enjoying a summer day on the lake in Whistler.

Your boating adventure begins at the Lakeside Park Watersports Centre on beautiful Alta Lake. Of the five freshwater lakes in Whistler, Alta Lake is the most popular for boating recreation. Take advantage of Backroads’ free parking at the lake. Once there, you’ll be fitted with lifejackets and paddles prior to your departure. In addition to the Watersports Centre, Lakeside Park offers barbecue stands, children’s play areas and public washrooms, plus docks for swimming and sunbathing.
You may want to bring a light snack, however our concession stand does sell ice cream, novelties and other snacks. It’s also a good idea to bring a warm sweater or light jacket, as mountain weather changes quickly. Backroads Whistler operates in rain or shine, and provides complimentary warm clothing and rain gear. Don’t forget to bring your camera, so you have lots of pictures from your boating adventure.
All boat rentals include life jackets and paddles.
